About Maya
Before opening my private practice, I worked as a medical social worker at Mount Sinai Hospital in transplant, intensive care, and acute rehabilitation. During my graduate training, I interned at the Hospital for Special Surgery with people living with chronic rheumatologic illness. Working in hospitals taught me how closely the body and mind shape each other, and how often people are expected to keep going without anyone acknowledging what it costs them.
I bring that whole-person view into therapy, because how we feel is never separate from what's happening in the body. That's why I may sometimes suggest checking in with your doctor about sleep, hormones, thyroid, or bloodwork, especially after having a baby, so we have the fullest picture of what you're going through.
My style is eclectic, and my primary approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence-based therapy for anxiety & depression that helps you loosen the grip of difficult thoughts and feelings so you can spend more of your energy on what matters to you. I also encourage clients to experiment with breathwork and movement, as ways to settle the body when the mind won't.
For clients who are drawn to it, I offer therapeutic writing and journaling, as well. It's always optional and no writing experience is needed.
